About this school

Robert Treat Academy Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school serving kindergarten through 8th grade at two Newark campuses. Founded in 1997 by the North Ward Center, it runs its own admissions process. Applications directly to the school rather than through Newark Common App.

Programs and services reported by the school:

  • Structured K–8 model: core curriculum emphasizing reading, grammar, mathematics, and science with daily technology use.
  • High school placement: guidance counseling helps 8th graders apply to county magnet schools, district specialty schools, and private preparatory schools.
  • Care: remedial and homework support, clubs, and activities before and after the regular school day.

The school reports that applicants must be Newark residents, that kindergarten children must turn five by October 1, and that families apply to one campus per year, with each campus running its own lottery. Uniform required (green top, khaki bottom).

Admissions details above are reported by the school; confirm current requirements on its admissions page. Reported enrollment for 2025–26 is 714 students (NJDOE).
