This may be the theme but it’s also an untruth. Maria L. Varisco-Rogers Charter School is destined to continue to be on the lower end of the scale due to its lack of quality leadership. The board of directors either don’t care about the youth of Newark or are blind to the the attics of the Principal, Ann Heywood. This woman couldn’t be bothered to speak at the graduation of her students. Instead choosing to shout across a crowded room, “I didn’t know that I was supposed to speak”. Imagine if you dare- the expressions of the parents and families of those graduating. Shock registered amongst all except for the parents and students. They were use to her less than enthusiastic approach to education and anything having to do with it. There are no extra curricular activities at this school and most of the time it’s as though they take it day by day. I’m sure there are good teachers however how effective can one be without good leadership. If you call the office, they must have been directed to transfer calls to her for this is what they do. However, she never has the answers. I was appaled to find out that she didn’t come to the prom. She definately leaves a lot to be desired and if those in charge don’t care then they should be pleased. If there is one caring board member then they should start from the beginning. It was my understanding that the purpose of charter schools are to afford urban students a better education. If this is the case, then why bring in an alternative school? You are putting your short comings as teachers on the shoulders of the students. It is not their fault. If they don’t make changes, these students are destined to be at the bottom of the heap until they are fortunate enough to escape.
I left one important note–the diplomas were not signed. “Not enough time”, said the Principal.
well Marion P Thomas school is the same way the principal this year is never any where to be found in the school no one is in the office I had to take my child out the school all the good teachers left I guess they went to the other Marion P Thomas school some charter schools do need better staffing starting with the principals and teachers
I didn’t have the same experience. When I made an appointment I was seen.
I HAVE TO AGREE WITH MS. SHARUNDA GUTIERREZ ! YOU REGISTER YOUR CHILDREN IN MARIA VARISCO CHARTER SCHOOL ,WITH HOPES AND EXPECTATIONS THAT THEY WILL BE IN A BETTER ENVIROMENT AND ABLE TO GET A BETTER EDUCATION AND ALSO SUCCEED IN LIFE.. SERIOUSLY SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE WITH THE PRINCIPAL…SHE LACKS EFFORT AND DEDICATION TOWARDS THE SCHOOL AND SADLY TOWARDS THE STUDENTS AND THE PARENTS. SHE IS NEVER PRESENT IN ANY SCHOOL FUNCTION, AND IF SHE IS IT’S LIKE SHE IS NOT THERE. SHE NEEDS TO TAKE A STAND AND TRULY DEDICATE HERSELF TO HER SCHOOL.THE TEACHERS ARE GREAT ! THEY TRY THEIR BEST TO HELP, BUT THERE IS SO LITTLE THAT CAN BE DONE WITH A PRINCIPAL THAT SHOWS NO INTEREST WHAT SO EVER IN THE SCHOOL OR THE CHILDREN. IT REALLY IS A SHAME THAT WHEN PARENTS HAVE TO VISIT THE SCHOOL FOR ANY REASON AND YOU HAVE TO TALK TO MS.HAYWARD THE REACTION THE ,ATTITUDE AND HELP YOU GET FROM THE PRINCIPAL ,IT NOT PROPER OF A SCHOOL PRINCIPAL. NOT EVEN A PROPER GOOD MORNING,OR GOOD DAY. HEY A SIMPLE HOW CAN I HELP YOU WOULD BE NICE. IT ‘S VERY SAD THAT SHE DOES NOT VALUE HER STUDENTS OR SHOW RESPECT TO THEIR FAMILIES.SHE TRULY LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED.SHE NEEDS TO STEP UP AND INTERACT WITH THE STUDENTS AND PARENTS AS WELL. A CHILD ‘S EDUCATION IS NOT TO BE PLAYED WITH. THEY NEED A PRINCIPAL WITH VALUES AND THAT KNOWS HOW TO SHOW SUPPORT IN EVERY ASPECT POSSIBLE.SHE NEEDS TO BE A LEADER,SHOW HER FACE , DELIVER A DECENT SPEECH WHEN NEEDED.BE FIRM ,BUT AT THE SAME TIME CARING , UNDERSTANDING AND FLEXIBLE…IT’S A SHAME THAT WE HAVE TO DO THIS ,BUT IT HAS TO BE SAID ,IT HAS TO BE HEARD..FOR OUR CHILDREN’S SAKE….
