Today, Thursday, April 16, 2009, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) posted on its website, the preliminary American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) allocation of funds for Title I and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These funds create an unprecedented opportunity for educators to implement innovative strategies to improve education for at-risk students in Title I schools and to improve outcomes for children and youth with disabilities, while also stimulating the economy.

Among them, six are requesting to open new charter schools in Newark.

Below are the names of the six proposed new charter schools who could potentially serve Newark’s children: 

• Newark Legacy Charter School
• Robert S. Pritchard Institute Charter School
• Siti-Nyah Charter High School “Women of Purpose”
• Thurgood Marshall Charter School
• Vailsburg Prep Charter School
• Visions Academy Charter High School

If approved, these schools will bring the total number of Newark charter schools to nineteen in the year 2010. Last year, four applications were received by the NJDOE for Newark charter schools. Among the four, one has been approved and is scheduled to open this fall (2009-2010), the Newark Educators’ Community Charter School. At least one Newark charter school is reapplying, the Thurgood Marshall Charter School. The other two who were not approved last year were Kingdom Academy Charter School and
Newark Crossroads Academy Charter School.

“We are seeing a continued interest in establishing new charter schools,” said Commissioner of Education Lucille Davy.  “We received two more applications than we did last year, which indicates to us that the charter school movement in New Jersey is still going strong.”

New Jersey currently has 62 charter schools that enroll more than 19,000 students. Six additional charter schools are scheduled to open in September 2009.

Commissioner Davy said the applications are a sign that interested citizens and organizations throughout the state are committed to providing school choice for students and their families.  She will announce the results of the review of the new applications on or about September 30, 2009.

NECCS will open its doors in September 2009 to serve 200 students in grades K through 3. The school will add a grade each year until it reaches its full enrollment of 400 students in grades K through 8. We are located in Newark’s Lincoln Park neighborhood at 17-19 Crawford Street in an historic building that is being renovated especially for the school.
